The Shira Route is one of the less crowded and more remote routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. It approaches the mountain from the western side and begins at a higher altitude compared to other routes. This makes it a scenic and adventurous option, offering stunning views of Shira Plateau, Kibo Peak, and vast alpine landscapes.
The route passes through diverse ecological zones including moorland, alpine desert, and glacier zones before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m). The Shira Route is ideal for trekkers who want a quieter experience with dramatic scenery and a strong sense of wilderness.
However, because the trek starts at a high elevation, proper acclimatization is very important to reduce the risk of altitude sickness..
Your journey begins at Shira Gate, where registration is completed before entering Kilimanjaro National Park. The trek starts on a high plateau with wide-open views and continues through heath and moorland vegetation. The scenery is vast and dramatic with early views of Kibo Peak.
Today’s hike crosses the beautiful Shira Plateau. The terrain is gentle but exposed, offering stunning panoramic views. You will experience a gradual ascent while enjoying unique alpine landscapes and changing weather patterns.
This is an important acclimatization day. You ascend to Lava Tower at high altitude before descending to Barranco Camp. The dramatic change in elevation helps your body adapt better for summit success.
You tackle the famous Barranco Wall, a thrilling and non-technical climb that offers incredible views from the top. After the wall, the trail continues through ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp.
The trail becomes more barren as you enter the alpine desert zone. You continue steadily to Barafu Camp, the base camp for the final summit push. Rest and prepare for the midnight ascent.
You begin the summit attempt at midnight, climbing steep volcanic slopes to Stella Point and then Uhuru Peak (5,895m). After celebrating at the summit, you descend back to Barafu for rest and continue down to Mweka Camp.
After breakfast, you descend through lush rainforest back to Mweka Gate. At the gate, successful climbers receive certificates before transfer back to your hotel.
