Marangu Route are Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” the Marangu Route is the oldest and most established route on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the only route that offers hut accommodation instead of camping, making it more comfortable for many climbers. The trail approaches the mountain from the southeastern side and passes through beautiful rainforest, heath, moorland, and alpine desert zones before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
The Marangu Route is considered the easiest route in terms of walking conditions, but the short acclimatization time makes summit success more challenging compared to longer routes. It is ideal for climbers who prefer comfort huts and a shorter itinerary.
Your journey begins at Marangu Gate where registration is completed before entering Kilimanjaro National Park. The trail passes through dense rainforest filled with towering trees, colobus monkeys, and rich birdlife. The hike is steady and enjoyable, leading you to Mandara Hut for overnight rest.
Today’s trek takes you out of the rainforest and into the heath and moorland zone. The landscape opens up with wide views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The air becomes cooler as you ascend toward Horombo Hut.
The trail continues through the alpine desert zone, a dry and rocky landscape with minimal vegetation. You will pass the famous “Last Water Point” and continue steadily toward Kibo Hut, preparing for the summit push.
An early midnight start leads you through steep scree slopes to Gilman’s Point and finally Uhuru Peak (5,895m). After celebrating at the summit, you descend back down to Kibo Hut for rest and continue further down to Horombo Hut for overnight stay.
After breakfast, you descend through the moorland and rainforest zones back to Marangu Gate. At the gate, successful climbers receive summit certificates, marking the completion of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
