The Rongai Route is the only trail that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the northern side, close to the Kenya border. It is known for being quieter, drier, and less crowded compared to southern routes. This makes it an excellent choice for trekkers who prefer a more remote and peaceful climbing experience.
The route offers a gradual ascent through forest, moorland, and alpine desert zones before joining the Marangu Route near the summit. Climbers enjoy beautiful views of Mawenzi Peak and wide open landscapes with fewer rainfall interruptions.
Although it is one of the easier routes in terms of terrain, proper acclimatization is still important for summit success at Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
Your journey begins at Rongai Gate with registration before entering the forest zone. The trail is gentle and quiet, passing through pine forest and farmland areas with chances to spot wildlife such as colobus monkeys.
You continue through heath and moorland zones with wide open views of the Kenyan plains and Mawenzi Peak. The trail becomes more scenic and slightly steeper as you ascend.
A shorter but steeper climb leads you to Mawenzi Tarn, one of the most beautiful camps on Kilimanjaro, located beneath the dramatic spires of Mawenzi Peak.
This day is reserved for acclimatization. You may take short hikes around Mawenzi Ridge to improve altitude adaptation and enjoy spectacular views of rugged volcanic formations.
You cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, entering a dry alpine desert landscape. The environment becomes harsh and barren as you approach Kibo Hut, the base for your summit attempt.
The summit attempt begins at midnight, climbing steep scree slopes toward Gilman’s Point and finally Uhuru Peak (5,895m). After celebrating at the summit, you descend back to Kibo Hut for rest and continue down to Horombo or Mweka Gate depending on itinerary arrangement.
